This is the fourth in a series of briefings the Caucus is hosting for progressive women to focus on the burning issues that will be raised during the 2012 campaign season. The sessions are targeted at area candidates, potential candidates, campaign workers, and community members.

Earlier sessions focused on reproductive choice, education funding, and gay rights issues. Participation is free of charge to NWPC members, or $5 per session for non-members. Here is the rest of the schedule:

March 31, 2012: How can we combat voter suppression? Hear from Denise Lieberman and Stacey Newman on voter ID legislation.

April 28, 2012: How can we serve and protect children in our state?

For registration and questions, please email Lois at loisvwtep@primary.net with the subject “WPC Series.”

Holiday party raises funds for candidates

The Caucus celebrated the holidays with a festive event Dec. 4 at the newly-renovated home of Lois VanderWaerdt. All proceeds went to EMPAC to support Caucus-endorsed candidates in 2012.

Our special guest was our newest state rep, Tracy McCreery (shown below with Dianne Modrell and Meg Ullman). Tracy won the special election for the District House seat formerly held by Jake Zimmerman and Barbara Fraser.

Caucus hosts legislative wrap-up

Former State Senator Joan Bray moderated a panel discussion of the recently-completed state legislative session on Saturday, June 4. Seven progressive legislators urged attendees to contact Governor Jay Nixon to urge vetoes on several bills, including late-term abortion, voter IDs and drug tests for welfare recipients.

The Caucus joined local chapters of the National Organization for Women (NOW) and PROMO in sponsoring the session. Participants included State Senator Robin Wright Jones and Representatives Rory Ellinger, Jeanne Kirkton, Stacey Newman, Mary Nichols, Jeanette Mott Oxford and Jill Schupp.

The National Women's Political Caucus is a multipartisan, multicultural, grassroots organization dedicated to increasing women's participation in politics and helping
to achieve equality for all women.

Honoring Joan Bray and Rita Heard Days

In September 2010, the Caucus recognized Joan and Rita with a gala reception at the Moonrise Hotel. Each of these wonderful women served eight years in the Missouri House and 12 in the Senate. Former U.S. Senator Jean Carnahan served as emcee of the event.
